Your exposure level and what each result means
Can’t find what you need? Email support@okoint.com
Your exposure level is at the top of your report. It reflects how easily a stranger could get from what is public about you to something sensitive, such as where you live or how to reach you. Each result below it says what it shows, how sure we are it’s you, and what to do about it.
Exposure levels
| Level | What it means |
|---|---|
| Low | Little about you is easy to find. |
| Moderate | Some details are findable, but they take effort to connect. |
| High | A stranger can connect your details to something sensitive in a few steps. |
| Severe | Sensitive details are widely listed and easy to reach. |
The level is about how easy it is to connect your details, not how many results there are. One listing with your home address next to your phone number can matter more than many old accounts.
How a stranger could reach you
This part of the report shows the routes from one detail to the next. For example, an old forum username matches a people-search listing, and that listing shows your street address. The shorter the route, the higher it ranks. Fixing one step usually breaks the whole route.
Kinds of result
- People-search listing. A profile about you on a site anyone can search. Often shows your address, age and relatives. Fix it with an opt-out.
- Phone number or address. A detail that appears next to your name. We list every site that shows it.
- Paywalled detail. The free page hides it, but anyone willing to pay a small fee can unlock it. It’s worth opting out before someone pays to look.
- Old account. An account under your email or username that still shows something about you, such as a city. Change what it shows, or close it.
- Data breach. A company lost data that included your email, and sometimes more. See breaches.
- Search result. A page that shows up when someone searches for your details.
How sure we are
Each result is marked with how sure we are that it’s about you:
- Confirmed as you: it matches a contact detail you confirmed.
- Probably you: it matches enough of what we know about you.
- Not yet confirmed: it could be someone else with your name. Check it before you act.
- Inferred from other findings: we worked it out from other results rather than seeing it directly.
If a result isn’t you, see When a result might not be you.
What a report doesn’t cover
Every report ends with its limitations. Public records such as property, court and voter filings aren’t searched, images aren’t searched, and family members’ own exposure isn’t investigated. A site that blocked our search is listed there too.
