    Research

The location, local threats, and anything public about the trip or event.

  3. Step 3

    Brief

A short brief for travelers or organizers before departure or opening day.

  4. Step 4

    Monitor

Optional monitoring during the trip or event, with alerts if something changes.

Keeping a leadership offsite out of the public eye

A company was sending its leadership team to a resort for a three-day offsite during a contentious layoff. Security wanted to know the risks and keep the location quiet.

The situation

The company had announced layoffs a few weeks earlier, and some former staff were angry online. Leadership was heading to an offsite at a resort. The security lead wanted to know about local risks and whether the location was already public.

What we did

We researched the venue and surrounding area, checked local news and events for the dates, and searched social media and forums for anything mentioning the company, the offsite or the resort. During the event, we monitored the same sources and kept a line open to the security lead.

What we found

Two attendees had posted about the trip with photos that made the resort easy to identify. A forum thread from former employees was discussing leadership’s travel. There was also a large public event in the nearby town that would affect traffic on the arrival day.

What changed

The two posts were taken down before the trip, and arrival times were adjusted around the town event. The two-page brief went to every attendee. Monitoring during the offsite didn’t turn up anything that needed action.
